Set the record for the fastest Everest ascent and for spending 21 hours on the summit without oxygen
About
Babu Chiri Sherpa reached the top of Mount Everest ten times during his life. He set two world records that still stand today. In 1999, he spent 21 hours at the summit without using extra oxygen. The next year, he made the fastest climb up the mountain ever, in just under 17 hours.
He was a skilled climber. He hoped to use his earnings to build schools in Nepal. In April 2001, he died after falling into a crevasse. This happened while he was taking photos of the mountain’s Western Cwm area.
