Also known as Bhim Datta Pant
Farmer-rights martyr who led a salt protest against landlord elites in far-western Nepal; a city is named after him
About
Bhimdatta Panta studied in India. There, he joined the Quit India Movement. He then returned to Nepal’s far-western region. He joined the Nepali Congress and helped start schools for local communities.
He became a strong voice for farmers’ rights. He spoke out against the region’s powerful landlords, known as “elite Thakuris.” He led a protest where he gave out salt from Bramhadev Mandi to poor farmers. This directly challenged the landlords. Because of this work, he became a target. In 1953, local landlords had him executed on charges of treason. He was only 27 years old.
In 2016, the Government of Nepal officially named him a martyr. The town of Bhimdatta in Kanchanpur District is named after him. It was once called Mahendranagar.
