Bhimsen Thapa
Deceasedभीमसेन थापा
First and longest-serving Mukhtiyar (Prime Minister) of Nepal, ruling for 31 years
About
Bhimsen Thapa came from Nepal’s Thapa clan. In 1806, he became Mukhtiyar. This made him the kingdom’s true ruler while two kings in a row were too young or unable to rule. He held this post for 31 years. This is the longest term of any Nepali prime minister.
During his rule, he made the royal government stronger. He reorganized the Nepalese Army. He led the country through the Anglo-Nepalese War against the British East India Company. In the end, rivals at court brought him down with a false accusation. He died shortly after losing power. Later, Nepal honored him after his death as one of its national heroes.
