Chandra Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana
Deceasedचन्द्र शम्शेर जङ्गबहादुर राणा
Rana-era Prime Minister who abolished slavery in Nepal and secured British recognition of Nepal's independence
About
Chandra Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana was educated in Kolkata, India. He lived a strict lifestyle, even though he suffered from tuberculosis. In 1901, he removed his more liberal brother, Dev Shamsher, from power. This made him the fifth hereditary Rana Prime Minister of Nepal.
He ruled for almost 30 years. People generally remember his rule as conservative. Even so, he made some important reforms. He outlawed sati, the practice of forcing a widow to die on her husband’s funeral fire. In 1926, he formally ended slavery in Nepal. In 1923, he negotiated the Nepal–Britain Treaty. This treaty secured British recognition of Nepal as a fully independent nation.
