Girish Ballabh Joshi was born Yadunath Sharma. He worked as an Ayurvedic physician, known in Nepali as a kabiraj. At the same time, he wrote Bir Charitra. He published it in 1903. Many people see it as the first Nepali-language novel. It marks the beginning of the modern Nepali novel tradition.
