Honoured as one of the Four Pillars of Nepal Bhasa; opened a school defying Rana-era bans on modern education
About
Jagat Sundar Malla grew up in Bhaktapur. He later moved to Kathmandu to study at Durbar High School. He then studied at Kolkata’s Scottish Church School.
At the time, the Rana regime actively discouraged the spread of modern education among ordinary people. Malla defied this and opened a school at his family home in 1913. He taught English using Nepal Bhasa as the teaching language. He believed children learned faster in their mother tongue. To support this, he wrote and published his own textbooks.
In 1916, he travelled to Japan with his younger brother, Padma Sundar Malla. There, he pursued higher education that was not available in Nepal at the time. Today, people remember him as one of the Four Pillars of Nepal Bhasa.
