Also known as Jayasthitimalla
Medieval king credited with unifying the Kathmandu Valley and codifying its caste and legal system
About
According to the traditional account, Jayasthiti Malla was brought to the Kathmandu Valley from the Mithila region in 1354. He came to marry the heir apparent, the person next in line to rule, of Bhadgaon. His exact family background remains debated among historians.
He rose to prominence in valley politics after the regent Devalakshmidevi died in 1366. In 1382, he removed the reigning king, Jayarjunadeva, from power. He then ruled the Kathmandu Valley with near-absolute authority until his death in 1395.
People remember his reign as a turning point in medieval Nepali history. He brought together and strengthened royal power. He also carried out sweeping social and legal reforms, including putting caste divisions into a formal, written system. These changes left a lasting mark on Newar society.
