Juddha Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana

Deceased

जुद्ध शम्शेर जङ्गबहादुर राणा

Rana-era Prime Minister who rebuilt the Dharahara tower after the 1934 earthquake

About

Juddha Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana was made a general as a young man. This happened after his brother, Bir Shumsher, rose to the position of Prime Minister. In 1932, Juddha himself became the 15th hereditary Rana Prime Minister of Nepal.

People chiefly remember his thirteen-year rule for the reconstruction efforts he led after the disastrous 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake. This work included rebuilding Kathmandu’s landmark Dharahara tower, which the earthquake had destroyed.
