कृष्णलाल अधिकारी

Also known as Subba Krishna Lal Adhikari

Nepal's first "literary martyr," imprisoned and killed for publishing a book on maize cultivation deemed treasonous by the Rana regime

About

Krishna Lal Adhikari published Makaiko Kheti in 1920. This was an agricultural manual about growing maize. The Rana regime read it as containing hidden criticism of the government. They judged it treasonous.

He was sentenced to nine years in prison because of this. He died in jail in 1923, before completing his term. This fate led to his recognition as Nepal’s first literary martyr. Today, Tinlal Park in Manthali, Ramechhap, commemorates him.
