About
Kulman Ghising trained as an electrical engineer in India, on a scholarship. In 1994, he joined the Nepal Electricity Authority.
From 2016, he served as its managing director. During this time, he ended a power-cut schedule that had reached up to 18 hours a day. He did this by cutting pilferage, the theft of electricity in small amounts, speeding up stalled hydropower projects, and managing supply more efficiently. This turnaround made him widely known across Nepal.
He was removed from the post in March 2025, in a move seen as politically motivated. He returned to public life during the 2025 Gen Z protests. At the time, people suggested his name as a possible interim prime minister. Instead, he was named Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation in Sushila Karki’s interim government.
