Madhav Kumar Nepal

माधवकुमार नेपाल

Also known as Makune

34th Prime Minister of Nepal (2009–11); longtime General Secretary of CPN (UML) who later founded CPN (Unified Socialist)

Currently Co-coordinator, Nepali Communist Party

About

Madhav Kumar Nepal rose through the underground Marxist-Leninist movement, starting in the late 1960s. He became one of the longest-serving general secretaries in the history of CPN (UML). In 2009, after Pushpa Kamal Dahal resigned, Nepal was chosen as Prime Minister as a consensus candidate, meaning someone most sides could agree on.

In 2021, he split from CPN (UML) to found CPN (Unified Socialist). In 2025, this party merged into the broader Nepali Communist Party. These events reflect a pattern seen throughout his five-decade career: Nepal’s communist movement has often split apart and then joined back together in new forms.
