Prithvi Narayan Shah’s unification campaign, launched from the small Gorkha Kingdom, expanded Nepal’s borders over three decades and brought the previously disunited principalities of the Kathmandu Valley under a single crown. His reign is generally treated as marking the end of Nepal’s medieval period and the start of its modern history.
