Pioneering Nepali banker who founded Himalayan Bank, Nepal's first joint-venture commercial bank
About
Prithvi Bahadur Pande is the son of diplomat-historian Bhim Bahadur Pande. He trained as a chartered accountant in Delhi. In 1992, he founded Himalayan Bank, Nepal’s first joint-venture commercial bank, a bank set up and owned together by more than one company. This opened the sector to further private competition.
He went on to lead Nepal Investment Bank. He later chaired Nepal Investment Mega Bank. He became one of the most prominent figures in Nepali banking.
In August 2026, he became the subject of a Central Investigation Bureau case. The case alleges organised crime, banking offences, and criminal conspiracy, connected to loan settlement decisions made at the bank.
