Rajendra Bikram Shah

Deceased

राजेन्द्र विक्रम शाह देव

King of Nepal whose reign saw the rise of Jung Bahadur Rana and his own forced abdication in 1847

About

Rajendra Bikram Shah rose to Nepal’s throne at age three, after his father’s death. He reigned during one of the most turbulent periods in the country’s history.

The 1846 Kot Massacre brought Jung Bahadur Rana to power as hereditary Prime Minister. The following year, Jung Bahadur forced Rajendra to give up the throne, in favour of his son, Surendra. After this, the deposed king was kept under close watch. He lived first in Bhaktapur, and later at Hanuman Dhoka Palace, for the rest of his life.
