Shukraraj Shastri

Deceased

शुक्रराज शास्त्री

Intellectual and fighter for democracy honoured as one of the four martyrs of the Nepalese revolution

About

Shukraraj Shastri was known as an intellectual and an outspoken critic of the Rana regime. He was not formally a member of the secret Nepal Praja Parishad, unlike the other three martyrs. Even so, he was executed by hanging at Pachali Bhairab, in Teku, Kathmandu, in January 1941, for his opposition to the regime. Today, people remember him as one of the four martyrs of the Nepalese revolution. This revolution ultimately led to the overthrow of Rana rule, a decade later, in February 1951.
