Nepalese Gurkha recipient of the Victoria Cross for gallantry during World War II
About
Tul Bahadur Pun was 21 years old when his unit came under heavy fire, during an attack on a railway bridge at Mogaung, Burma, in 1944. Most of his section was killed or wounded. He continued the charge alone. He killed three enemy soldiers. He forced five more to flee. He captured two machine guns. For these actions, he received the Victoria Cross.
In 2009, his fellow Gurkha veterans campaigned for UK residency rights. Actor Joanna Lumley prominently supported this campaign. It drew renewed attention to his story, after he was initially denied entry to Britain.
