Girvan Yuddha Bikram Shah
Deceasedगीर्वाणयुद्ध विक्रम शाह देव
King of Nepal during the Anglo-Nepalese War, whose reign ended with the Sugauli Treaty that defined the country's present-day borders
About
Girvan Yuddha Bikram Shah became King of Nepal at just eighteen months old. His father, Rana Bahadur Shah, had given up the throne, known as abdicating, in his favour. Because Girvan was so young, Queen Tripurasundari and Prime Minister Bhimsen Thapa ruled on his behalf for his whole short life.
His reign was defined by the Anglo-Nepalese War against the British East India Company. The war ended with the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli. This agreement forced Nepal to give up roughly a third of its territory. It also fixed the country’s present-day borders. Girvan died at age 19, shortly after the treaty was signed. His infant son, Rajendra Bikram Shah, became the next king.
