Founder and general secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal, the first Nepali communist party
About
In 1941, Pushpa Lal Shrestha witnessed the execution of his elder brother, Ganga Lal Shrestha, one of the four martyrs of the Nepalese revolution. This drew him into the fight against Rana rule.
He began his political career with the Nepal Praja Parishad. He later became office secretary of the Nepal Rastriya Congress. This party was the sister party of the Indian National Congress. It would eventually become the Nepali Congress.
He grew disillusioned by infighting, or internal conflict, within the party, and by its willingness to cooperate with some Rana figures. He broke away. After meeting the Indian communist leader Nripendra Chakrawarti, he founded the Communist Party of Nepal in April 1949, with four colleagues. This earned him lasting recognition as the father of Nepali communism.
