About
Ram Chandra Poudel spent more than 15 years in detention, across different periods, for his role in Nepal’s pro-democracy movements. He then built a decades-long career in the Nepali Congress. He held numerous ministerial posts, under a series of governments.
As President since 2023, his largely ceremonial role has placed him at the center of Nepal’s recent political turbulence, or instability. He has presided as head of state through the 2025 Gen Z protests, Sushila Karki’s time as interim prime minister, and the transition to Balendra Shah’s government.
