Girija Prasad Koirala

Deceased

गिरिजाप्रसाद कोइराला

Also known as G.P. Koirala

Four-time Prime Minister of Nepal; led the 1990 People's Movement restoring democracy and signed the 2006 peace accord ending the Maoist insurgency

About

Girija Prasad Koirala had a political career that lasted six decades. In 1947, he organised Nepal’s first workers’ movement. He spent nearly ten years in jail for his activism. He later served four terms as Prime Minister.

People remember his final term for bringing Maoist rebels into a peace process. This process ended the civil war and set Nepal on the path toward becoming a federal republic, a country where power is shared between a central government and states or provinces. He also faced criticism during his career. This included his handling of the 2001 royal massacre and allegations of corruption. He was the younger brother of B.P. Koirala, Nepal’s first democratically elected Prime Minister.
